DIARY OF A SOUTH AFRICAN WOMAN: The Neighbor Next Door (Episode 2)

I couldn’t believe how quickly things escalated with sipho. That first afternoon on the sofa still haunted me—his lips pressed against mine, the heat of his body, and the way I had let myself surrender to him so easily. The guilt lingered, but it was tangled with a dangerous sweetness that I could not shake.
Themba, my husband, had always seen me as the quiet, faithful wife. If only he knew the fire that kabelo had ignited in me, one that refused to die out no matter how many times I tried to bury it.
For weeks, I tried to convince myself that it was a one-time mistake. Sipho had even said it himself: “Maybe we should leave it there, Ayanda. It was wrong… but unforgettable.” His words replayed in my head at night when Thabo lay snoring softly beside me.
But wrong or not, I wanted him again.
It was on a late Tuesday afternoon when Sipho showed up at my door. I told myself to be firm, to send him away. Instead, when his hand brushed against mine, my whole body betrayed me. He leaned closer, his breath warm on my cheek, and whispered, “Ayanda… do you ever think about me the way I think about you
My throat went dry. I should have said no. I should have pushed him away. Instead, I nodded—just once—and that was enough.
The next moment, his lips were on mine. It wasn’t rushed like the first time. It was slow, deliberate, almost tender. His hands explored my waist, sliding under my blouse until his fingers traced the curve of my back. Every nerve in my body came alive as I melted into him.
We stumbled upstairs, our kisses deepening with every step. By the time we reached my bedroom, I was already trembling with need. He unbuttoned my blouse, revealing my breasts, and when his mouth found them, I gasped so loudly I thought the neighbours might hear. My skin burned under his touch as he teased me, moving lower, slower, until my skirt was pushed aside and he knelt between my thighs.
The moment his tongue brushed against me, I arched back, clutching the sheets. I had never experienced such raw intensity before. Themba had never made me feel like this. I cried out Sipho’s name as he held me open and devoured every inch of me, until I shuddered with a release so sharp it left me weak and shaking.
When he finally entered me, it was different from that reckless first time. His movements were deep, deliberate, and I clung to him as he whispered my name over and over. The guilt in my chest battled with the overwhelming pleasure of being wanted so completely.
Afterwards, we lay tangled together, our breaths ragged. I should have sent him away. I should have promised myself never again. But instead, I rested my head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat, and whispered the question that had been burning in me for weeks:
Sipho… what if this isn’t just a mistake? What if I can’t stop wanting you?”
The room fell into silence. His arm tightened around me, and his answer was a soft murmur that sent shivers through me:
“Then, Ayanda… we’re both in more trouble than we think.”"
I whispered, “What are we doing, Sipho? What if Themba finds out?”
He brushed his lips over my ear and answered in a voice that made my heart stop,
Sipho tilted my chin and looked straight into me. His voice was steady, but it shook me to my core:
"Maybe it’s not themba you should be worried about, Ayanda. Maybe it’s me… because I don’t think I can stop wanting you now."
And that’s what terrifies me the most.
Diary—what if I don’t want him to stop?
